How to Start a Greeting Card Business – “Foreword”

I would like to thank my old Boss for sacking me. That was the best thing he ever did for me. I would also like to thank him for pointing out to me how I didn’t have a business brain and for constantly putting me down and pointing out how I would never have the talent and business ability that he does.

Back in 1996 I packed up my things with a lump in my throat, and went off to start my own business as my old Boss just shook his head and had a laugh to himself as I set off into the world by myself.

I started operating from home and slowly over the years I built up my business and grew stronger and more confident that I could be successful. Fueled with the determination to show my old Boss I do have what it takes, I was taken under the wing by a wonderful Mentor who opened my eyes to the real world of business and marketing and how to treat people – with respect and dignity.

I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know about the real success behind many businesses and when I discovered that I ascended to a much higher level in the world of business. It so happens my Mentor and my old Boss use the same accounting firm and my Mentor told me that my old Boss is no longer in business he went broke and is now living down the coast in a caravan. Oh well he still got the ocean view he was always talking about.

I guess you can tell I am still a bit affected by that experience but these are the experiences in life that shape us, make us who we are. Can you imagine if I had believed in what my old Boss was telling me – that I couldn’t run my own business, that I wasn’t talented enough?

His business failed as a result of sacking and loosing all of his good and talented staff. He couldn’t admit that they were talented and valuable to the success of his business, instead he put them down like he did me and because of the big chip he had on his shoulder he lost it all and ended up with nothing.
